Deal ongoing as Bayern Munich still in race to sign Tottenham world Champion striker if possible this summer

Bayern Munich are contemplating a possible transfer moratorium for Harry Kane, according to Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia). Instead of attempting to sign him for a fee of 100 million euros or more this season, the club may pursue him in 2024, when his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expires. Meanwhile, Werder Bremen and Germany attacker Niclas Fullkrug is being mentioned as a possible replacement.

Needless to say, if this allegation is correct, Bayern Munich will be unable to win the Champions League for the foreseeable future (at the very least). Harry Kane will never join Bayern Munich on a free transfer, and Niclas Fullkrug is just marginally better than Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting – he is not the type of player Thomas Tuchel requires to take this squad to the next level. He is NOT a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

On the plus side, Plettenberg’s information has become less dependable since Hasan Salihamidzic was fired by the board, so this might just be him spitballing to get reactions. Unfortunately, the risk of missing out on a striker like Kane is significant.

Bayern’s current board, which includes Karl Heinz-Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness, has always been famously tight-fisted when it comes to paying transfer prices. Fans have long been concerned that they will object to the exorbitant transfer prices sought by European clubs for top attackers. Given their affinity for German players, they may regard Fullkrug as a possibly safe stopgap until next season, when Kane may be available (to anybody other than Bayern).

Unfortunately, the club cannot afford to be frugal in this situation. Simply put, in a market where Felix Nmecha costs roughly €30 million, there is no way a top-tier striker like Kane, Kolo Muani, Osimhen, or anyone else will cost less than €100 million. That is simply not going to happen. Bayern Munich must move boldly this summer or risk permanently losing its place in the Champions League. Teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid will simply expand the gap, because keeping up is far easier than catching up.

Bayern Munich must avoid becoming entangled in a rush to catch up to the big guys. That means signing a striker this summer, preferably Harry Kane, who is not a stopgap, and certainly not Niclas Fullkrug.
