Newcastle in serious negotiations with Liverpool to sign 22-years-0ld sparking midfielder

Liverpool has completed its second signing of the summer, and the focus now shifts to who will be number three.

The Reds revealed Dominik Szoboszlai on Sunday, having triggered RB Leipzig’s $76 million (£60 million/€70 million) release clause before it expired on Friday (via the ECHO). The Hungary international has signed a five-year contract with Liverpool, joining Alexis MacAllister in Jürgen Klopp’s summer reconstruction.

There is still plenty of work for the Liverpool manager to do, and all eyes will be on what his next priority will be.

The Reds are still looking for at least one new defender to help reinforce one of the squad’s weak areas from last season, and more names are emerging as possible candidates.

One of those linked is said to be planning talks with Chelsea about his future, while Newcastle may be looking for vengeance after missing out on Szoboszlai’s signing.

Here, Liverpool.com scans the other major clubs in the Premier League and around Europe to see what’s going on at the other clubs.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea defender Levi Colwill wants to speak with Mauricio Pochettino before making a decision on his future.

This summer, the 20-year-old has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Liverpool apparently making an enquiry (as per 90min). The Mail also claims Chelsea turned down a $38 million (£30 million/€35 million) bid from Brighton, with the Seagulls prepared to pay $51 million (£40 million/€47 million) for Colwill.

Colwill fits the bill in so many ways for Liverpool, according to Liverpool.com. He’s young, left-footed, and has already played in a system at Brighton that will serve him well at Anfield.

Chelsea may be enthusiastic about keeping him, but Colwill appears to believe he needs reassurance that he will get game time, and understandably so. He’s demonstrated he’s ready for a regular spot in the Premier League, and if the Blues don’t give him one, he’d be well within his rights to go.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United is interested in signing Sporting CP defender Gonçalo Inácio.

The 21-year-old had been connected with a summer move to Liverpool (as reported by Fichajes and others), but Newcastle has now entered the race, with Inácio claimed to ‘match the profile’ the Magpies are searching for.

According to Liverpool.com, it appears that everywhere Liverpool turns this summer, Newcastle isn’t far behind, and it’s a situation the Reds will have to get used to given the Magpies’ newfound finances. If they win this potential transfer war, it could be retaliation for Liverpool’s victory in the Dominik Szoboszlai race.

Despite Newcastle’s promotion to the Champions League next season, Liverpool has already demonstrated that it still has an advantage. Like Szoboszlai, many players will want to play under Jürgen Klopp regardless of the competition, so the Reds shouldn’t be anxious about having to compete with Newcastle for signings, despite the disparity in resources.
