Rudi Galetti has provided an update on Newcastle United and Liverpool’s summer transfer battle, as the two sides appear prepared to clash again over Khephren Thuram.

The Italian writer came to Twitter today to provide an update on Khephren Thuram’s position, noting that Newcastle and Liverpool are both interested in the France international.

OGC Nice is braced for Premier League interest in Thuram, and Rudi Galetti believes Newcastle or Liverpool would make the first move, saying: “Liverpool are speeding things up for Khephren Thuram.”

Liverpool wants to cut the gap on Newcastle, which is making moves.

“LFC wants to close the gap with Nice as soon as possible in order to anticipate NUFC’s competition, which is starting to move concretely for the French player: evolving situation.”

Khephren Thuram has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time, with early rumors claiming the Magpies were interested in both him and his brother Marcus, who has since joined Inter Milan.

Thuram might cost more than £50 million, putting him in the unlikely category.

Thuram, who is valued at £52 million, is unlikely to be cheap if Newcastle remains interested, given he plays in a position similar to arriving Sandro Tonali.

After losing Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool, I’m sure Newcastle fans would love to pull one over on Liverpool in the market this summer, but my gut sense is that Khephren Thuram isn’t as much of a priority as he previously was due to the Tonali coup.

However, given Galetti’s confidence, there may still be something to it. He’d undoubtedly be an excellent signing, but is this a position we’re currently considering? I’m still not convinced.
