Erik ten Hag seals £58m reunion in huge triple deal – Manchester United’s dream defence

Manchester United’s season starts in less than a week, so we thought it would be interesting to plan out an ideal end to the summer window for Erik ten Hag’s men.

Manchester United’s summer hasn’t exactly been going to plan.

They’ve lost to Liverpool, Arsenal and Rosenborg, and last season’s injury crisis looks to have spread, like mould, into the fibres of the current campaign.

Rasmus Hojlund is out for around six weeks with a hamstring injury, but arguably the bigger kick in the teeth is the loss of new signing Leny Yoro, who joined from Lille for £52million last month after United pipped Real Madrid to his signature
The centre-back suffered an ill-timed metatarsal injury and has been ruled out until late October, leaving a gaping hole in Erik ten Hag’s defence, particularly after Raphael Varane’s departure

As such, we thought we’d have a go at imaging what a perfect end to the summer transfer window might look like for the Red Devils and spoiler alert, there are a couple of reunions in store.

Landing De Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt has been on United’s radar ever since Ten Hag’s arrival in 2022. The Dutch defender, 24, is in the shop window after a reasonable, but somewhat underwhelming, two-year stint at Bayern munich.

It’s understood the German giants want around £42m for the player, and while United are trying to drive down the price, there’s a sense that it won’t take an awful lot to get a deal over the line.

Landing De Ligt would reunite him with Ten Hag, his former boss at Ajax, for the first time in five years. The defender captained Ten Hag’s Eredivisie-winning side in 2018/19 and was crowned European Golden Boy after helping the club reach the Champions League semi-final before sealing a £70m move to Juventus.

With De Ligt in the mix alongside Lisandro Martinez, United would have a pair of reliable, experienced centre-backs to call upon, and wouldn’t be forced to chuck Yoro, who, lest we forget, is still only 18, in at the deep end.

Signing Mazraoui

Noussair Mazraoui is another name on United’s summer wishlist and it’s understood they’ve already had a bid for the Bayern ace turned down. The Red Devils submitted a joint offer for both Mazraoui and De Ligt at the back end of last month, though it was knocked back.

Mazraoui, 26, is believed to be keen on a switch to Old Trafford and has even rejected a move to West Ham in the hopes a deal will be struck with United in the coming weeks.

Like De Ligt, the Moroccan full-back, who made just 19 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern last season, played under Ten Hag at Ajax and is eager to link up with him again. According to reports, Mazraoui has agreed personal terms with United and is just waiting for the move to be greenlit.

Offloading Wan-Bissaka

Much, however, will depend on whether United can offload Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham this month. The east London club are in talks to sign the former Crystal Palace defender, and if they do, it’ll free up space in United’s squad for Mazraoui.

Wan-Bissaka has struggled to nail down a starting spot under Ten Hag, and with Diogo Dalot playing nearly twice as many games as he did last season, the time might be right for the Englishman to move on.

West Ham are making waves in the transfer market this summer, having already lured Crysencio Summerville, Max Killman and Luis Guilherme to the club, and they want Wan-Bissaka to compete with Vladimir Coufal for the right-back spot. United want £18m for the 26-year-old, and if a deal is agreed they can use the funds to secure moves for De Ligt, Mazraoui and…
