Newcastle are willing to sign a £15m player with a tricky release clause

Fabrizio Romano provided an update on the circumstances surrounding in-demand Newcastle target Arda Guler’s release clause last night.

Arda Guler has a release clause that has just been activated, which means that any interested teams would only have to pay Fenerbahce €17.5 million (£15 million) for their 18-year-old midfielder, who has been rated as one of the game’s brightest prospects.

However, now that Fabrizio Romano has offered further information, it appears that the situation isn’t as clean and dry as it appears, which would explain why Arda Guler is still at Fenerbahce despite attention from all around Europe.

Newcastle have been monitoring the child who has been compared to Lionel Messi and have even conducted negotiations with his family about a move, but the Magpies are only one of many clubs interested in him. Not to add that Fenerbahce is attempting to persuade Arda Guler to sign a new contract that does not include a release clause.

Fabrizio Romano has now stated that there are more factors at play than only the clause that may deter potential purchasers. “The release clause of Arda Guler is €17.5 million, but keep an eye on because this is not a traditional type of release clause,” Romano noted on his YouTube channel. Other details need to be clarified internally at Fenerbahce because they are still attempting to speak with Arda Guler in order to retain the player.

“It’s critical for players to understand that having that type of release clause, the main issue is the signing fee, the commission, and so signing Arda Guler is complicated.” He wants to play football; he doesn’t want to go to a club where he will be a substitute; he wants to play football.

“Also, they’re asking for really important commissions on the player side, so the rumours about the commission are absolutely confirmed, and this is why it’s important to understand that many clubs are interested.”

“I can tell you, for example, that he’s not going to PSG because they’re not happy with this crazy situation surrounding this fantastic talent, but it’s also true that signing Arda Guler is difficult at the moment.”

“Before saying he’s going to this club or that, remember that he wants to play, he doesn’t want to be on the bench, and the financial package is far more than the €17.5 million release clause, and Fenerbahce is still doing everything they can to keep the player, to extend the contract, to keep him on loan, to find a solution.”

Romano also rhymed off a list of teams reported to be interested in Arda Guler this summer; oddly, Newcastle’s name was not mentioned, although we know from prior reports that there is.

If Guler can live up to his promise, he’ll be a fantastic signing. However, I’m not sure if Eddie Howe would immediately put him into the first-team, which could be a stumbling barrier given his desire to play.

That said, I’ve already stated that if Newcastle loaned Guler back to Fenerbahce for a year as part of the deal, it would be a win-win situation.
