Tottenham Hotspur re-signing loanee Clement Lenglet would reveal the club’s lack of ambition, according to podcaster Chris Cowlin.
The Frenchman made 35 appearances on loan from Barcelona in North London, but he was part of a Spurs defense that allowed 63 goals in 38 league games.
Spurs need to enhance their team following a disappointing season that saw them finish eighth and sack Antonio Conte, and incoming manager Ange Postecoglou faces a difficult task in rebuilding the squad.
It is evident that defensive reinforcements are required, and it has now been suggested that Spurs will keep the 27-year-old on a permanent basis.
Cowlin is skeptical of the transfer, telling TalkSPORT that failing to upgrade on Lenglet sums up Spurs’ dearth of desire right now.
“There’s a lot of talk about us signing Lenglet on a permanent deal from Barcelona for around five million pounds,” he said.
“So it all depends on how we perform in this window, because are we going to go and show real intent, are we going to go and sign real top quality players from European leagues, or are we going to put up with Clement Lenglet coming in to Tottenham?” That is not what I expect to see.”
Although he was part of a terrible defense, other players such as Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez received more criticism as part of Spurs’ troubles throughout the season, and Lenglet might be a serviceable squad member at the proper price.
If Spurs can negotiate a cheap agreement and a pay cut from his £145k-per-week earnings, Lenglet may be a key rotation option who is familiar with the club, allowing them to trade players like Sanchez and Dier.
Spurs require significant upgrades across the board, and with no European football, Postecoglou may find it tough to bring in many higher-level players.
Keeping Lenglet, who has won trophies with both Barcelona and Sevilla, as an experienced squad option at a low cost may allow Spurs to shift finances to other areas of the pitch while perhaps adding another defender in addition to the France international.
If Harry Kane does not leave this summer, then Spurs may find funds limited, and this could mean that upgrades on the likes of Lenglet may have to wait.
