Tottenham Hotspur could follow in the footsteps of Manchester United by making a new signing.

Stan Collymore has warned Tottenham that James Maddison might follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, as Spurs reportedly planned a £40 million approach for the Leicester star. Sancho has underperformed since joining Manchester United for £73 million from Borussia Dortmund, but Ange Postecoglu will be hoping that Maddison thrives in north London.

Spurs and Newcastle have both indicated interest in Maddison, but Postecoglu’s side are poised to make the initial bid of £40 million, hoping that Leicester will reduce their £60 million valuation. Maddison has a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium after their relegation, and he wants to return to the Premier League.

Former Liverpool striker Collymore, on the other hand, has questioned Maddison’s ability to adapt his performances to a high club, comparing him to Mason Mount, who is desired by United. “Maddison will leave Leicester City as the biggest fish in a small pond, and if he went to Old Trafford, he’d suddenly be a very small fish in an ocean,” Collymore wrote in his CaughtOffside column.

“Would he rise to the occasion, thrive under pressure, or shrink?” – All you have to do to see what the latter entails is look at Jadon Sancho.

“Someone recently asked me, if Manchester United are willing to spend £50 million on a midfielder and have identified an England international in his mid-20s as the ideal candidate, why don’t they go for Leicester City’s James Maddison?”

“It’s a good question, but signing Maddison is a completely different prospect than signing Mount, and I think that’s why we’re seeing the likes of Spurs and Newcastle linked with him, and Man United and Liverpool linked with Mount – and that’s no disrespect to either of the former, but it’s telling of where the sides are in terms of their projects.”
