After defeating Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest is comfortably tucked away in the Premier League’s mid-table, according to Martin O’Neill, who feels the team is “getting it all together.”
When Steve Cooper’s team defeated Villa 2-0 at the City Ground on Sunday, they triumphed for the first time in two months, at least momentarily stopping the Claret and Blues’ momentum.
Ola Aina’s first-half goal and Oril Mangala’s second-half goal moved Forest up to 12th place, six and seven points above the bottom three.
While discussing the match on talkSPORT, the 71-year-old was asked which of his previous teams, having managed and played for Forest as well as guided Villa into European football more than ten years ago, he wanted to win.
Although he remained neutral, he acknowledged that Forest appeared to be headed in the right direction and expressed his lack of surprise at the result.
“It was a significant outcome,” O’Neill informed Jim White. “And what do you know? I knew Aston Villa would struggle mightily to get there. Aston Villa, who are on a real good run, are packed for the game but never get going.
“Forest scores the first goal early on, and the football team at Forest has some talented players.” Excellent players at the moment. Since I believe the manager is doing a fantastic job with Villa, I was probably rooting for a draw to give each team a point. He seems like a great manager to me. The forest is gradually coming into its own.
