Adam Johnson, 29, passed away following a freak accident in which he suffered severe injuries while playing for the Nottingham Panthers.

The relatives of an ice hockey player who died after an opponent’s skate cut his throat have described the “horrific” moment they witnessed him suffer fatal injuries from across the Atlantic.

In front of 8,000 spectators, Adam Johnson, 29, passed away following an injury he received in an unusual mishap while participating in a Nottingham Panthers game last Saturday.

Along with his father and grandmother, the player’s aunt Kari Johnson from Minnesota was observing him play on a livestream.

“It was terrible, it was horrific, and we didn’t know what to do,” she said to Sky News. Nothing we could do prevented it.

While watching the game, Ms. Johnson claimed that the family “knew right away he was in trouble.”

Her nephew’s teammate gave Mr. Johnson’s father a call and promised to stay in touch.

His aunt said, “We all just broke down – it was a mess, it was a nightmare, it was like it wasn’t real,” after finding out about his passing.

We were taken aback. We didn’t think this could be real.

Sheffield held an inquest into his death last week.

A “private kid” and a “kind soul,” Ms. Johnson said her nephew “wouldnever have wanted to be in the limelight like this.”

She claimed that all he wanted was to “have the time of his life in the UK” and become “good at hockey and have fun.”

She also mentioned that he intended to propose to his girlfriend Ryan Wolfe, who on Monday posted a tribute to him on Instagram. “My darling, darling angel. I will always love you and miss you.

Ms. Wolfe has identified the deceased Mr. Johnson.

A private family funeral is scheduled to take place in the US on Sunday. On Saturday night, a vigil in honor of Mr. Johnson was held at Nottigham’s Motorpoint Arena.

Regarding the vigil, Ms. Johnson stated, “It means a lot to us to see how much everybody thought of our boy.”

“He was having a great time there [in Nottingham], meeting some of the fans, and he liked it.”
