Cleveland Browns: Quarterback Rumors Abound in Trade Deshaun Watson Following a New Report

Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns is the subject of a trade rumor in Week 8, which stems from an intriguing report by Mike Florio of NBC Sports. In the 2022 offseason, the Browns traded three first-round selections for Watson. In 2022, the 28-year-old quarterback inked a $230 million, five-year contract.

Fans and commentators have been perplexed by Watson’s absence over the past few weeks. When Watson was given the all-clear to play in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens, according to Florio, the Browns players believed he would. Watson did not participate in the Ravens’ 28-3 lopsided victory.

Watson was hurt badly in the Colts game and left after a few snaps. He did not play the following week against the 49ers. Watson is already out of the picture for Week 8.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Watson’s injury, a rotator cuff strain, is expected to take four to six weeks to heal. According to Rapoport, Watson’s absence is not significant because the Ravens game is out of bounds for that kind of injury.

Florio isn’t so certain, though, that Watson’s Sunday absence is due to nothing else. Florio cited Watson’s playing stints with the Houston Texans and injured Clemson. Watson’s rib injury prevented him from flying, so he even took a bus to the Texans game.

“Having said that, it would be foolish not to consider the possibility that Watson has lost interest in the Browns. Only a few months after agreeing to a large-money extension, he wanted to leave Houston. Prior to the Browns making an offer for a five-year contract that was fully guaranteed, Watson also eliminated the Browns as the first team from his list of four finalists for 2022.

So, yes, there is a strange vibe. Nothing has been said or done by the team or Watson to change the situation. And we’ll keep an eye on things and generally sniff around to see if the honeymoon has devolved into a standoff that, frankly, leaves neither side with many options, given that Watson is set to earn $46 million in 2023, 2024, and 2025, with every penny fully guaranteed.

It’s nearly enough to make us wonder if a surprise trade will take place before next Tuesday. But who would take on the remainder of that contract at this point?”

The Browns have yet to pay off their Watson trade with the Texans. They still owe Houston a first-round pick in 2024. What would another team be willing to give up in exchange for Watson, given his recent play and injuries?

More importantly, that guaranteed salary is another issue for a player who will come to a new franchise and fanbase with baggage for off-the-field and now-on-the-field reasons.

The Browns and Watson might not want each other now, but they’re stuck.
