Tottenham are now leading the race to sign Leicester City sparking midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur will “push” to sign James Maddison next week, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, because the Leicester City midfielder is Ange Postecoglou’s “priority target.”

Tottenham are reportedly leading the fight for Maddison, after having a deal rejected last week, according to The Guardian, with rival bidders Newcastle United preferring a move for AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali.

According to the same report, the Leicester star is due to leave this summer after the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League, and Spurs are anticipated to make a fresh bid for him, with Postecoglou keen on bringing in reinforcements in the midfield.

Although Newcastle have cooled their interest in the 26-year-old, reports elsewhere indicate they are still interested in the player, who is valued at £60 million by his present club, meaning the Lilywhites may have to complete a deal sooner rather than later.

Romano has now claimed on Twitter that Tottenham “will push again” for the Englishman next week, as he remains Postecoglou’s “priority target” in that area of the pitch.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs are willing to match Leicester’s £60 million asking price, but a second attempt to capture the former Coventry City player is likely in the near future.

Newcastle’s withdrawal of interest in the England international is a significant help for Tottenham, who are also hoping that the idea of living in London would be a deciding factor, despite the Magpies’ offer of Champions League football.

While Spurs currently lead the fight for the attacking midfielder’s signature, the hope is that progress can be achieved next week, as he might be a wonderful addition to Postecoglou’s side.

The Leicester star, dubbed “sensational” by the media, has dazzled over the course of several seasons, scoring 19 goals in 30 games last season, far and away the most of any player in the Premier League.

Despite playing for a team that was relegated, the maestro was recognized as the 15th-best performing player in the Premier League, owing largely to his efforts in the offensive third.

Maddison might truly kick on next season at a club like Tottenham, where the objective is to contend for the top four, and he should surely remain Postecoglou’s major goal.
