A couple of early goals cost Nottingham Forest a 2-0 loss away to 10-man Manchester City.
With a quarter of an hour gone and 2-0 down, the visitors were in for a long afternoon, but they did come back in the second half. Matt Turner saved a Julian Alvarez free-kick in the first five minutes, but he was powerless to prevent City from taking the lead.
With seven minutes gone, Phil Fod scored on a 46-pass play after latching on to Kyle Walker’s excellent throw. Seven minutes later, Erling Haaland was left unmarked at the far post and easily headed in Matheus Nunes’ cross.
They didn’t get much ball time, although they did have a little better spell near the end of the first half. The closest they came to scoring was when Taiwo Awoniyi was fouled on the edge of the D following a powerful run, and Morgan Gibbs-White’s set-piece effort was blocked.

They upped the tempo and had a few promising moments, with Gibbs-White, Orel Mangala, and Nicolas Domiguez all attempting to score, but the visitors couldn’t find a way through. Turner, Matt: He couldn’t do much about the goals conceded because he wasn’t helped by those in front of him. I made a couple of solid stops to keep Alvarez at bay. 6.5 out of 10
Ola Aina: Made a fantastic second-half sprint forward, outrunning Kyle Walker. For the second goal, perhaps the team should have been more aware to the threat of Haaland. 6.5 out of 10
Aurier, Serge: It’s a relief to have him back, and his versatility as a back three player is crucial. But he won’t be pleased with Haaland’s free header. 6 out of 10
Willy Boly: Held strong with a few massive blocks, notably one in the first half to keep Alvarez at bay. At the very least, his illness does not appear to have hampered him. 7 out of 10
Nuno Tavares: Not his greatest 40 minutes on his debut start, as City had a lot of success down that side. It’s alarming to see him pushed off the field due to injuries. 5 out of 10
Nicolas Dominguez: A difficult debut, but he showed a lot of promise, especially in the second half. Throughout, it appeared bright and sharp. 7 out of 10
Sangare, Ibrahim: It was difficult to get into the game since I saw so little of the ball. It is obvious that settling in and adjusting to the tempo of the Premier League will take time. 6 out of 10
Orel Mangala: Could have used the ball more effectively at times, especially because Forest saw so little of it before the break. superior in the
Gonzalo Montiel (for Tavares, 40 minutes): A far cry from Monday night. This time, he gave a far stronger performance, including a crucial tackle on Foden. 7 out of 10
Callum Hudson-Odoi (56mins): Added some enthusiasm when he came in as the Reds sought for a goal. 6.5 out of 10
Anthony Elanga (for Sangare, 56mins): Displayed some fantastic moments and had a shot on goal, coming close near the finish. 6.5 out of 10
