Newcastle United transfer rumours as the Magpies are linked with a January move for Carlos Alcaraz

Newcastle United have been linked with a January move for Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old Argentina star impressed in the Premier League last year, particularly when the Saints came to St James’ Park in in April.

Reports suggest the Magpies made enquiries in the summer transfer window, and the youngster has fallen down the pecking order at St Mary’s. He hasn’t started their last three Championship games, which could alert Newcastle for a January move. United signed Tino Livramento from the Saints in the summer, of course, and talkSPORT report Eddie Howe is a big fan of Alcaraz.

The former Racing Club attacking midfielder is valued at around £15m, having joined Southampton for £12m in 2022.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says he owes Eddie Howe for his big chance in British football. The Australian was appointed Celtic manager after Howe decided against taking the role.

He enjoyed two successful seasons in Scotland before landing the Spurs job this summer, and speaking to BBC, said: “I’ve got to thank Eddie Howe because that was pretty much done. At the end, Eddie, for a number of reasons, just didn’t feel comfortable taking the role. They’d gone so far down the path of him being appointed that it was really late.
