Leeds United will be looking for their first home win of the season on Saturday

Daniel Farke will be obliged to make unwelcome changes for Leeds United’s match against Watford at Elland Road this Saturday. Leeds extended their unbeaten run to five games with a hard-fought draw against Hull City on Wednesday night, thanks to two changes made by the manager. But he’ll be forced to make additional changes this weekend against the Hornets since Joe Rodon is suspended after being sent off at MKM Stadium. Of course, Wilfried Gnonto is a doubt after limping out of Wednesday’s match after only 21 minutes.

With Leeds searching for their first league win at home on Saturday, here are some of the moves Farke may be considering.

Rodon will miss the encounter against Watford due to his one-match suspension, as previously stated. At least one change will be made in the backline, and on the surface, Farke appears to have a clear decision between Charlie Cresswell and Liam Cooper.

Cooper came off the bench on Wednesday to fill the void left by Rodon at center-back in East Yorkshire, with Cresswell left out entirely. However, it remains to be seen whether Cooper is well enough to play 90 minutes after returning from injury for the first time in a month and a half on Wednesday.

Cresswell is the right-sided option, so Pascal Struijk won’t have to switch sides, and after putting in a decent performance or two at the start of the season, he’ll have every right to feel cheated to be on the periphery. There will also be a change at full-back, with Sam Byram anticipated to return to the starting lineup.

The 30-year-old was given a rest at the MKM Stadium, coming on in the 89th minute to replace Luke Ayling, but he should be ready to return. But on which wing remains to be seen, given that Ayling has played a lot of football and, at the age of 32, may be due a rest.

Farke has been reluctant to change his favoured midfield tandem of Archie Gray and Ethan Ampadu, and the two played 90 minutes together again at Hull. As a result, it appears that alterations will only be made in the middle if they are absolutely essential.

Gray and Ampadu have both played a lot of football, and with games coming thick and fast, bringing in either Glen Kamara or Ilia Gruev may be advantageous.

Attack
We’ll certainly learn more about Gnonto’s injury this afternoon during Farke’s pre-match press conference, but considering how he exited the field on Wednesday night, he must be at least questionable for Saturday’s rapid turnaround. As a result, a change on the left could be made, while Dan James’ poor performance against his hometown club on Wednesday night ensures his position in the starting XI is far from safe.

After his impressive performance against the Tigers, Crysencio Summerville is undoubtedly a candidate for selection. Summerville was a threat on the night, sending a message to Farke, who had left him out of the starting lineup.

Jaidon Anthony is another player pushing for a place, and while he has struggled to make an impact so far, he will be eager to make his full debut at Elland Road and establish himself at his new club.

While Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter didn’t shine as brightly as they did against Millwall, Leeds do have Ian Poveda and Joe Gelhardt available, and Patrick Bamford isn’t far away from full fitness either.
