Newcastle United star Callum Wilson landed a jibe at West Ham United forward and his ‘club foot’ after the striker missed a golden opportunity for the Hammers at the weekend.
David Moyes took an early lead over Manchester City on Saturday through a James Ward-Prowse header and managed to keep out a dominant Pep Guardiola side until half time. However, just one minute into the second half, new signing Jeremy Doku found the net to level the scores.
It was with the match at 1-1 when Antonio burst past Ruben Dias to set up a one-on-one with Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, but a clumsy touch saw the ball lurch forward out of his control. West Ham went on to lose the match 3-1.
Speaking about the match on the BBC Sounds’ Footballers’ Football Podcast, Antonio lamented the chance. The 33-year-old said: “I’ve cut across him but my touch was a bit heavy. I did everything right. The touch was just slightly too heavy but it is what it is.
“I’m a bit disappointed by the amount of opportunities I’ve had, one in this game, none in the last game. You’ve got to take the opportunities when they come and I didn’t take my opportunity this week. One thing with me is I know I’ll take the next one.
Co-host and pal Callum Wilson was less sympathetic with the West Ham man and joked that Antonio had a ‘trampoline foot’ with his poor touch which cost the goalscoring opportunity. He added: “Question is Mikey, would I have scored it? I’ve not seen it so I’m intrigued to know, obviously, there’s a gulf in class and finishing.
