Report Pep Guardiola sent message to £55m star as Tottenham mess up

Pep Guardiola has moved to praise Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku after Tottenham Hotspur missed out on him.

Jeremy Doku has dazzled Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola with his display against West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

Guardiola praised Doku whilst speaking to BBC Sport following a 3-1 City win in East London.

Guardiola may have feared the worst when James Ward-Prowse put West Ham ahead in the first half.

City called after the break though with Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland all finding the net.

Few would back against another Premier League title for City this season, with Guardiola ushering in a new era at the Etihad Stadium.

Jeremy Doku praised by Guardiola

Doku is part of the new era, alongside fellow summer signings like Josko Gvardiol and Matheus Nunes.

Established players like Aymeric Laporte, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez all departed this summer, with City deciding to sign younger players with some potential.

Doku brings something completely different to the City side, showing sensational pace and dribbling ability when running straight at the defence.

That’s how Doku scored against West Ham, driving at Vladimir Coufal before dipping inside and slotting into the corner.

This was a great example of what Doku can do at his best, and Guardiola loved what he saw from the Belgium international.

Guardiola feels that Doku was ‘shy’ in his debut start for City, but was ‘unbelievable’ against West Ham.

Guardiola added that Doku played like a ‘proper winger’, turning in a ‘very good performance’ in East London.

“I would say that the first game he was shy and today he was not, it was an unbelievable game,” said Guardiola. “He was a proper winger, have the ball, have the ability to go 1v1. Not just that, he has the quality to read when to make the pass for the next player. I was very happy, it was a very good performance from Jeremy,” he added.

Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur to Jeremy Doku

City will be delighted to have landed Doku, especially with so much rival Premier League interest in the summer.

The Independent claimed in August that Tottenham were joining the race to sign Doku.

West Ham also wanted Doku but Spurs had joined the hunt to lure him away from Rennes.

City ended up winning the race in a deal worth around £55million, leaving Spurs to focus all attention on their eventual signing Brennan Johnson.

Right now, City will love that Doku has ended up in Manchester rather than North London.
