Surprise for Wolves as key Liverpool player is banned from Molineux game

Wolves have been handed a major boost for their upcoming Molineux date against Liverpool next weekend.

Wolves enter their tie against Liverpool in a week’s time, in desperate need of some points.

Just three points from their opening four games leaves Wolves in a precarious position needing points

They will be encouraged by the fact their only points so far though have came against Merseyside opposition.

However, Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp are a daunting task for any team, which won’t be giving Gary O’Neil much encouragement.

Virgil van Dijk releases statement after being handed further ban by FA

But he has just been handed a huge boost for their next game at Molineux which could tilt the scale a little bit.

Key player banned for Molineux trip

One player who is pivotal to Liverpool is their centre-half, Virgil van Djik, who’s importance has only gotten greater over the summer.

Therefore with Liverpool missing him through suspension, a huge opportunity could be opened for Wolves.

The defender initially received a red card against Newcastle United which saw him miss Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa.

Now however after admitting he had acted in an ‘improper manner’ following his dismissal, an extra game has been added.

This just happens to see him miss his teams trip to Molineux next weekend.

How important is Van Djik to Liverpool?

You might look at the Reds thumping win over Villa as proof they don’t actually rely on him, however this result was bucking a trend.

Liverpool were winless last season in the Premier League when big Virgil was absent from the squad, resulting in two losses and three draws.

In fact, across all competitions, Liverpool played 10 games without him last campaign, they only won two.

A victory on penalties in the League Cup over Derby and a narrow 1-0 win over… you guessed it, Wolves at Molineux.

Therefore while they have a poor record without him, against Wolves that didn’t matter too much, let’s see how this year goes as he also joins Trent Alexander-Arnold in missing this one.
