Tottenham set to fail as they are about miss out a classic deal for Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur are “set to fail” in their pursuit of Villarreal winger Nicolas Jackson, who has a “90%” deal with Chelsea, according to reports.

Despite not officially commencing work until July 1, Ange Postecoglou has been a busy man behind the scenes, with Spurs reportedly close to signing Empoli star Guglielmo Vicario to replace long-serving goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Lloris has already told Nice-Matin that he wants a fresh challenge and may leave this summer, pushing Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy to look for a replacement.

Further ahead, the north Londoners are desperate for a new centre-back, which has led to permanent links with Clement Lenglet and Man City defender Aymeric Laporte, among others.

Of course, with the departures of Lucas Moura and Arnaut Danjuma from Tottenham, Postecoglou is also severely lacking in the attacking area of the game. As a result, Tottenham are reportedly looking for more inventiveness and are interested in Leicester City player James Maddison.

Xavi Simons of PSV Eindhoven has also been pursued by the Lilywhites, but they appear poised to miss out on a target, according to Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke.

According to their sources, Spurs were interested in Jackson of Villarreal, but they are now “set to fail in their pursuit” of the Senegal international.

This is because he’s going to London rivals Chelsea, with a move described as “90% done”. Tottenhan chiefs had been weighing a move for the forward, but their cross-town neighbours have acted quickly to “all but seal” his signature.

Aston Villa and Bournemouth were reportedly interested in signing the 22-year-old, but according to this source, he is almost certain to join ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

Despite only making 26 La Liga games, Jackson finished 22/23 as Villarreal’s outstanding attacking performance, contributing 16 goal contributions in the final third (12 goals and four assists).

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig dubbed the winger “incredible” and a “MVP,” while Villarreal manager Quique Setien lavished praise on him after his failed January transfer to Bournemouth:
