South Korean goal machine set to complete medicals today at Norwich City as deal agreed

Norwich City have signed South Korean international Ui-jo Hwang on loan from Nottingham Forest for the remainder of the season.

Hwang, a forward with 56 caps for his country, will wear number 31 for the Canaries.

The 31-year-old has had loan spells with Olympiacos and FC Seoul since joining Forest in 2022, which included appearances for the Greek side in the UEFA Europa League.

Prior to Nottingham Forest, Hwang spent 2019-2022 with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, where he finished as the club’s leading scorer in both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

As an international, Hwang has scored 17 goals for South Korea including two in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying stages, which led to him featuring four times in the team’s run to the last 16 at the World Cup finals in Qatar.

He was named as the Korean FA Player of the Year in 2018 after performances in the Asian Games for the national team and in the J1 League with Gamba Osaka, for whom he scored 31 goals in his 71 appearances.

Hwang hails from Seongnam in South Korea’s Gyeonggi province, where he began his senior career with Seongnam FC after progressing through their youth ranks, via a spell at Yonsei University.

The loan signing said: “I am very excited. I want to help the team as much as I can. I can’t wait to play.

“I spoke with the coach and I heard good things from him. They are pressing high a lot, and the forwards link the play, it’s about hard-working and togetherness.”

Head coach David Wagner said: “We had to be patient, but we are very happy that we can now welcome Hwang to our squad.

“We wanted to give our group another option in the attacking areas following the injury to Josh (Sargent), so it makes us all very happy that we could find this solution.

“Hwang has great pedigree and experience at the very top level of both club and international football. We are excited by his quality and look forward to seeing him with our group.”
