Tottenham have been warned Richarlison is not a suitable replacement for Harry Kane by Teddy Sheringham. The former Spurs striker would like to see Ivan Toney or Evan Ferguson recruited to replace Kane’s goalscoring but admits deals for either would demand massive transfer fees.
Only 36-goal Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland and the 30-goal Kane scored more times in the Premier League last season than Brentford centre-forward Toney (20). However the England international cannot play until January 16, 2024 due to an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.
Ferguson meanwhile scored in Brighton’s 4-1 defeat of Luton at the weekend. The 18-year-old Irishman is a huge prospect and now has seven goals in 21 top-flight matches. But the Seagulls do not lose their biggest assets without being handsomely compensated and are expected to demand over £100million for Ferguson.
Sheringham told Express Sport: “Ange [Postecoglou] definitely needs to add another striker to the team. Richarlison is not a number nine that is capable of replacing Harry Kane. He doesn’t score enough goals and he’s not a poacher.
“He does offer Tottenham other qualities but he’s definitely not a number nine. Tottenham need to get a striker into the club that can slot straight into the starting eleven and be the focal point of the team. It’s so difficult to replace that quality that Kane had.
