Leadership team
Newcastle United’s “leadership group” for the 2023/24 season has been revealed. The group, which was formed by senior players and head coach Eddie Howe, has been in place for a year but was only just revealed before of the season opener against Aston Villa. It means that senior stars will now share Jamaal Lascelles’ club programme section equally.
Lascelles has openly welcomed the division of captaincy duties, but Kieran Trippier has stated that the ex-Nottingham Forest captain remains the club captain. Trippier indicated on Saturday that the club’s leadership can help it go forward.
“There will be times during the season when the manager will require the leadership group – Jamaal Lascelles, myself, Matt Ritchie, Callum Wilson, and Dan Burn – to be there for the team,” he explained. I’ve played in the Champions League for many years and hope to use my skills to aid the other players and the coaching staff since it’s a completely different experience.
“As a leadership group, we’ll be there and will do everything we can to help the team progress.” But, while we have a part to play, Jamaal Lascelles is the club captain, and I thought it was extremely effective what the gaffer did at the press conference in the United States to make that very obvious.”
Wilson’s concentration
No. 9 for Newcastle United Callum Wilson claims he used his disappointment at not starting against Aston Villa to motivate him. Eddie Howe left Wilson out of the starting lineup, but he later claimed that he used it as inspiration.

Tonali put in an all-action performance, and while Shearer was delighted with a number of Newcastle players as he delivered his verdict on Match of the Day last night, he singled out Tonali.
“There were some impressive performances from Newcastle players at St James’ Park,” he stated. I felt Gordan was fantastic, Isak was fantastic, Harvey Barnes was fantastic on his debut with a goal and an assist, but Tonali stole the show.
“As far as debuts go, this was the best. It was a flawless midfield performance. A goal, assists, tackles, a wide range of passing, late dashes into the box, impeccable timing, and getting dug in.
“He was just outstanding. With a performance like this, how can you endear yourself to the Geordie public? He was involved in practically everything.”
