Sources tell Football Insider that Liverpool have not given up hope of landing Romeo Lavia despite being outbid by Chelsea in yet another transfer saga.
The Merseysiders are in the process of bringing in another central midfielder and have reached a personal deal with Southampton’s star.
Chelsea have made an offer of roughly £55 million for Lavia, who has been the subject of three failed bids from Liverpool totaling up to £48 million, despite also attempting to seal a British-record move for Moises Caicedo.
Chelsea are on the verge of eventually signing Caicedo in a deal worth £115 million with add-ons.
On Saturday evening, the final parameters of the transaction were being negotiated after they agreed to improve on Liverpool’s £111 million offer, which was accepted by Brighton on Friday.
Caicedo notified Liverpool on Friday that he intended to join Chelsea, allowing the London club to renegotiate.
Meanwhile, Lavia was kept out of Southampton’s starting lineup against Norwich on Saturday because he wasn’t in the appropriate state of mind to play while transfer talks were ongoing.
“I believe it’s getting closer to a conclusion,” said manager Russell Martin.
The Lavia scenario is especially urgent for Liverpool, who kick off their new Premier League season against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday without the new midfield anchorman they’ve been looking for after losing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to mega-money Saudi Arabian deals this summer.
Man City will be entitled to 20% of any money paid for his services and will have a £40 million buy-back option that will go into effect next summer (2024).
Lavia, whose Southampton contract expires in June 2027, appeared 34 times in all competitions last season.
