Newcastle United began their Premier League campaign with a 5-1 victory over Aston Villa.
That was a statement performance after so much speculation about whether Eddie Howe’s squad would be ready for the season after exceeding expectations last time out.
Sandro Tonali scored on his debut before Alexander Isak scored twice, with Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes also scoring.
Isak stood out in particular and had a chance to score a hat-trick. His second goal demonstrated what a superb player Newcastle’s star is.
Wilson may have had a hat trick if Barnes had squared the ball sooner before scoring.
Callum Wilson believes he should have reminded Eddie Howe of his obligations.
Wilson has already scored four goals on the first day of his Newcastle career.
After being relegated to the bench for a club-record signing, the England international’s goal was the ideal response.
Wilson admitted after the game that he should have reminded Howe of that particular record.
“As a professional, you want to start the game,” he stated (through the BBC’s LIVE blog on 12/08/2023 at 20.11).
“You have to use that disappointment to your advantage so that when you do get on the field, you put your best foot forward.” I made it onto the scoreboard, but to be honest, I wanted more. I believe I hit it too quickly and did not allow it to pass through my body sufficiently. It’s something we can work on.”
When asked about his record, Wilson replied, “It is. I should have informed the management before the game.”
This Newcastle team is loaded with goals.
It’s hard to believe that at the start of the year, Howe’s team was struggling with goals.
They have experienced goalkeepers in the Premier League in Isak, Wilson, and Barnes.
Anthony Gordon is another option, and Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have already contributed.
