Eddie Howe explains why £30m star was a priority to Newcastle this summer

Tino Livramento was promptly signed by Newcastle United.

Indeed, the club is not understood to have entered the summer transfer market with the intention of acquiring a right-back.

Eddie Howe already had a good backup option in Harrison Ashby, who he signed in January as a replacement for Kieran Trippier.

Nonetheless, Newcastle are thought to have changed their plans to bring the “excellent” young prospect to St James’ Park for a rumoured £30 million when he became available.

Given Ashby’s recent signing and Newcastle’s FFP limits this summer, many may be asking why Howe chose to bolster a position that was not in severe need of it.

The Toon boss has now offered an update.

Indeed, Howe revealed why Livramento was prioritized during the team’s pre-match press conference on Friday.

“It was a priority position for us and an area that we needed to strengthen,” Howe told the Shields Gazette.

“Hopefully, he can play a variety of roles.” I believe he’s played left-back before, and I believe most right-backs can naturally go to the opposite side – it appears to be more difficult for left-backs.

“I believe he could play wide for us as well, but he’ll be primarily used as a right back, which will be his primary position.”

This is a win-win situation for Newcastle and the player.

With the understanding that Trippier will not be able to participate in every game next season, this is an ideal contract for Newcastle.

Livramento is thought to be content to play a supporting role in his debut season as he recovers from a long-term injury and gets to grips with Howe’s system, though he will see action as Newcastle battles on four fronts.

That understanding, along with the ability to trust on a good young player to give Trippier a break, will be crucial over the grueling season ahead.

While other positions require strengthening and FFP makes things difficult, Livramento’s signing is logical.
