Barnsley rejected Coventry City’s £2.5 million bid for former Leeds United defender

Barnsley turned down a £2.5 million approach from Coventry City for former Leeds United defender Liam Kitching.

According to the Barnsley Chronicle, the Reds value him better than Coventry’s initial offer, despite the fact that he only signed a fresh contract last season.

Kitching was named captain at Oakwell this week, but according to the source, he is eager to put himself to the test at a higher level, with Coventry ready to compete for promotion alongside his previous club Leeds this season.

The Sky Blues are among the favorites to finish in the top six after narrowly missing out on the Premier League in a penalty shootout in May.

Despite losing Viktor Gyokeres, Coventry appear to have one of the division’s strongest squads after investing extensively on a number of players, notably Ellis Simms and Milan van Ewijk.

Coventry’s £2.5 million deal for former Leeds defender Kitching has been rejected.

Kitching came through Leeds’ youth system but never made a senior appearance for the Whites before being sold to Forest Green Rovers by Marcelo Bielsa in 2019.

The 23-year-old impressed at Forest Green and was quickly snatched up by Barnsley 18 months later.

Kitching has gone from strength to strength since arriving to South Yorkshire, establishing himself as one of the top centre-backs in League One in recent years.

He has made 90 appearances for Barnsley, scoring five goals and provided five assists, which are impressive stats for a center defender.

If he is given a move to Coventry, he would face his previous club Leeds for the first time in his career.
