A credible journalist has already debunked a weird link for Nottingham Forest to sign Alexis Sanchez. The Reds were said to be interested in signing the striker.
Sanchez, according to El Futbolero, decided to leave Marseille this summer. It was absurdly alleged that he had decided to join Forest and accept a return to the Premier League.
However, the highly regarded Fabrizio Romano has cast doubt on the deal. He claims that Forest and Sanchez have had no touch at this point.
The 34-year-old has previous experience in the Premier League. He arrived to the country from Barcelona to sign for Arsenal and spent four years at the Emirates Stadium.
He was largely impressive during his time in North London. He bagged 80 goals and claimed 45 assists before rupturing his relationship with the Gunners faithful and signing for Manchester United.
At Old Trafford, things went south very quickly. He failed to live up to his billing and left after scoring five goals and claiming nine assists from just 45 appearances for the club.
Since leaving United he’s had pretty decent spells with Inter and Marseille. Last season, he found the net 18 times in all competitions; as the club made an impressive return to the Champions League.
Marseille players loved playing alongside him last season. Valentin Rongier called him ‘quality’ after a 2-0 win over Clermont and was extremely impressive across the campaign.
Romano says there is no substance between Sanchez and Forest
This is perhaps for the best when you sit down and really think about it. Sanchez would be another signing that has zero resale value and would likely command a substantial wage for one year.
He would, however, arrive in good shape. His 18-goal total from last season is not to be overlooked, and he would have surely brought a different option to the Forest attack.
This signing may not fit the mold of a Steve Cooper signing. However, Sanchez is a gentleman, and the head coach would have appreciated the opportunity to use him this season.
Romano is almost never wrong in this regard. Now that he’s declared that the earlier claims were incorrect, it’s probably best if Forest fans forget about their ambition of signing Sanchez.
