Leeds leading the battle race to hijack Newcastle world goalkeeper this summer

Leeds United are in advanced talks to recruit Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow after his proposed move to Bournemouth fell through.

Darlow, 32, spent last season on loan at Hull City, but Bournemouth instead signed Inter Milan’s Ionut Radu yesterday.

Mail Sport revealed earlier this month that Andoni Iraola’s team had increased their interest in the goalkeeper, who has two years left on his contract at St James’ Park.

The experienced former Nottingham Forest player last appeared for the Magpies in their Carabao Cup triumph against Tranmere in August and spent the season on loan at Hull.

He has featured in two of Newcastle’s three pre-season fixtures to date and has been allowed to leave their US camp to finalise a move away from Tyneside.

Eddie Howe has indicated that one of his five first-team goalkeepers may leave this summer, with Darlow the most likely to have tumbled down the pecking order.

‘A lot of unknowns,’ Howe told reporters after their 3-2 win against Gateshead. ‘It’s difficult to give any clarity because anything can happen from this moment.’

Darlow has made 100 appearances for Newcastle in his nine-year career, with his greatest season coming during the club’s promotion-winning season in 2016-17.

He also appeared in 25 games during the 2020-21 season.

Leeds have lost Joel Robles at the end of his contract and are awaiting bids for Illan Meslier, so they require experienced cover.

Max Wober joined Borussia Monchengladbach on loan yesterday, thus the team is trying to recruit two centre backs, two midfielders, a winger, and a striker, with Patrick Bamford, Willy Gnonto, and Crysencio Summerville anticipated to go.

Former QPR scout Gary Penrice has joined their recruitment team on a temporary basis.
