Palmeiras have told Leeds United that their 24-year-old defender Joaquin Piquerez is not for sale

Joaquin Piquerez, the left-back for Palmeiras, has notified Leeds United that he will not be sold this summer.

According to Torcedores, despite engagement from Leeds to bring the 24-year-old to Elland Road, Palmeiras’ board has ruled out any further departures of their players.

Leeds are looking for a new left-back this summer, and Piquerez is the latest name to be linked with a move as the Whites attempt to strengthen their squad.

Charlie Taylor and Ryan Manning are also among the names to have been mentioned as potential targets, though the latter has already sealed a switch to Southampton.

Junior Firpo is currently the only recognised left-back at the club, and he is expected to move on following Leeds’ relegation in May.

Piquerez is not for sale, according to Palmeiras.

It is unclear how much Leeds would be willing to pay for Piquerez at this point, though Palmeiras’ position makes a deal improbable before it has even begun.

Piquerez is well-known to former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, having played 90 minutes in the 68-year-old’s second game as Uruguay manager, his ninth cap for his country.

He has spent the entirety of his career in South America and has now made over 100 appearances for Palmeiras, who are one of the best teams in Brazil.

During his time with the club, Piquerez has scored five goals and registered nine assists, winning one league title, a Copa Libertadores and Recopa Sudamericana.

Piquerez would clearly represent a big coup for Leeds but it appears as though Palmeiras will block any attempt at a move.
