Celtics are ‘position-less’ Brad Steven said after Marcus smart trades

LAS VEGAS (AP) — While the Celtics can still make personnel moves this summer, certain doubts have arisen with the Marcus Smart trade. Smart was a divisive player at times, but he was tasked with leading the C’s as their starting point guard.

It’s uncertain who will fill the void left by the acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis and the trade of Smart to the Grizzlies. The Celtics, of course, have options for their starting point guard. Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon are the natural stand-ins, however it will be intriguing to see if Brogdon is promoted to a starting role following his Sixth Man of the Year campaign. Payton Pritchard is another guard on the C’s bench. When asked about the point guard dilemma, Boston president even Brad Stevens stated that it will be a team effort including the entire roster. Given the Celtics’ guards, but especially the performances of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, this is a foregone conclusion.

“All those guys,” Stevens remarked following the C’s Summer League victory over the Lakers. “First and foremost, Tatum brings the ball up as much as anyone on our squad. As a result, we consider ourselves to be a position-less team. But it will be Malcolm, Payton, Derrick, and Tatum who will get us started on offense.

“We’re not going to have that always designated as ‘that is a point guard, that is a two guard, that is a three.'” However, they are all extremely capable. Also, Jaylen. “Those guys are all good at bringing the ball up the court.”

Brad Stevens' promotion is a surprise that could have been expected

There is still time before those questions are answered. The Celtics could yet make moves to improve their roster, which would transform the team’s complexion. The club has seen substantial changes after Smart and Grant Williams joined new teams. But the Celtics remain title contenders for a reason, as they aim to return to the NBA Finals and win it all the next time.

“We’ll obviously try to add a little bit,” Stevens added. “I’d like to gain some depth, possibly on the wing, but also with a four/three type.” I’m optimistic about our bigs. We’ve got a couple two-ways, so there are certain things we’re still looking at.”
