After a player died last weekend, a local daily and its sister website are urging a reconsideration of ice hockey safety regulations.
Jim Montgomery, the head coach of the Dallas Stars, was abruptly fired on Tuesday for “unprofessional conduct.” The National Hockey League recently unveiled new initiatives aimed at addressing its culture and the bad behavior it occasionally condones.
The International Ice Hockey Federation’s current guidelines, which only “recommend” the use of the guard, have not been altered by the Elite Ice Hockey League thus far.
However, Sam Cooper, the audience editor for Nottinghamshire Live and a former ice hockey player, called the League’s position “tone deaf” in a first-person article.
Under the heading “Do it for Adam,” the League was urged to reconsider its stance on Saturday’s front page.
Sam wrote: “It has been almost a week since Adam Johnson, a player for the Nottingham Panthers, passed away tragically during a game against the Sheffield Steelers.
“After losing one of our own far too soon, the ice hockey family has come together like never before. However, we need the league’s administrators to step up and assist them.
“The awful reality is that we will never be able to determine if a neck guard would have made a difference on Saturday night. However, as the week has gone on, calls have grown for them to be required in all senior games.
