Fans of ice hockey have honored Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson, who passed away following a life-threatening injury he suffered during a game against the Sheffield Steelers that was witnessed by thousands.

A vigil was held at the scene of the incident, Utilita Arena Sheffield, last night, November 4, one week after the tragedy. A minute of silence was observed after a large crowd of supporters showed up at 8 p.m. with floral tributes to the American player, whose team number was 47.

“It was an emotional night in Sheffield as hockey returned to the city for the first time since last Saturday’s tragic events,” the Sheffield Steelers said in a statement.

The Sheffield Steeldogs defeated the Romford Raiders 6-5 (after overtime) in front of a boisterous crowd.

“Fans showed their respects during the 47th minute of the game with a special tribute to Adam Johnson.

“After the game, supporters went to the arena, where the Steelers coaches and players joined them for a special vigil outside our home building.”

Nottingham Panther’s home, Motorpoint Arena, hosted a vigil last night as well. On the ice, many supporters were sobbing as they signed books of condolence. Additionally, hundreds of floral tributes to Johnson have been left in front of Bolero Square’s Motorpoint Arena.

The Nottingham Panthers announced that while signing the books of condolence, the team’s players and staff would spend a quiet Saturday afternoon thinking back on their memories of Johnson. The Love for Hibbing and Hockey Memorial Fund was created in memory of Johnson, and the club has also announced the launch of an official fundraising page.

Johnson’s funeral is scheduled for today, November 5, in the United States, as per the obituary published on the Dougherty Funeral Home website in Hibbing, Minnesota.
