The North Bay & District Girls Hockey Association held their annual tournament this past weekend to commemorate their 25th anniversary. The Andre Purcell Team was the tournament’s sponsor this year.

Local teams began competing in the tournament on Thursday night. While some teams played games, other local teams participated in a skills competition hosted by the Nipissing Lakers Women’s Hockey Team.

Before the puck dropped on Friday night, the NBDGHA presented a jersey in honor of their joint partnership with the Nipissing Lakers. Most of the tournament participants helped pack the rink by participating in OUA action before the Lakers game.

The U15B and U15BB Junior Lakers teams made it to the championship game as the competition went on.

The U15BB team advanced to the championship game by defeating the Georgina Golden Hawks 3-1 in the semi-finals and finishing with a 2-2-0 record during round robin play. After losing 1-0 to Nepean, the U15BB Jr. Lakers won a silver medal.

With a record of 1-2-1 in round robin play, the U15B team barely made it to the medal round, finishing in fourth place. They defeated the top-seeded Stittsville Rockets 1-0 in the semi-finals. Regulation time proved to be sufficient in the championship, as the Junior Lakers and Nepean Wildcats were level at two points apiece. It had to go to a shootout.
