On Saturday night, Newcastle United defeated Arsenal 1-0, but there were some incidents during the match. It was strewn with them, in fact.
The game at St. James’ Park was intensely competitive and emotional, and Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal ultimately decided it.
Arsenal is so incensed about it that they have issued a statement denouncing a biased call and supporting manager Mikel Arteta’s shameful remarks made after the game.
The goal, though, wasn’t the main talking point following Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Additionally, there was the Bruno Guimaraes incident in the first half, in which the Brazilian player really ought to have been sent off for challenging Jorginho off the ball.
But Kai Havertz’s complete takedown of Sean Longstaff on the touchline was the first significant talking point of the game.
The Arsenal player made a terrible tackle, springing off the ground and crashing into Longstaff, leaving him in a heap. Had Havertz made proper contact with his leading foot, the situation could have been far worse for the 26-year-old. He was fortunate to escape injury.
Following a brief altercation between the two teams over the challenge, Newcastle was given three bookings. Yes, an Arsenal tackle that resulted in three yellow cards to one for the Magpies was absurd. Arsenal could have been given a red card for the tackle.
Jamaal Lascelles, the captain of Newcastle United, was extremely incensed by the tackle and spoke with Havertz afterwards.
When the game was being highlighted on BBC Match Of The Day, pundit Guy Mowbray commented on what Lascelles had said to the Germany international.
He said, “Jamaal Lascelles just told Kai Havertz, ‘You’ve tried to do him.'”

Havertz was extremely fortunate not to be deployed. It appeared red in real time, but after seeing it again, I decided that a very strong yellow was okay. However, upon closer examination once more, he realizes how risky it is, and he just misses catching Longstaff with that leading foot.
It could have been so much worse for Longstaff, who was able to play the rest of the game.
Lascelles was rightly furious with Havertz, as this is not the first time he has been involved in an incident against the Magpies.
During Eddie Howe’s first season in charge, Newcastle were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Havertz scoring the winner. But he was lucky to be on the pitch at that point, having produced a horrible elbow on Dan Burn earlier in the game. It really wasn’t pretty, and could have been a red.
He got away with it, just like he did on Saturday night. However, on this occasion it was Newcastle who ran out 1-0 winners.
Fortunately, Arsenal staff and fans have reacted in a perfectly normal and rational way.
