Elanga came through United’s academy after joining at the age of 12 and went on to make a total of 124 appearances between youth and senior level. While it was never going to be an easy decision to end a nine-year association with the club, he felt it was the right time to embark on a new journey after slowly losing his place in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

“Leaving United was a decision that was difficult, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he told Mail Sport. “I had to think about me and about what I wanted and how I wanted to see myself in the next few years.

“Of course I trained hard every single day, but at the end of the day, it was the manager’s decision and it’s not up to us players.

“We can only do when we come on the pitch, we can only control what we can control on the pitch. I want to score goals, I want to assist and I feel like I’ll do that more this season.
