The Browns defeated the Indianapolis Colts 39-38 on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. It wasn’t pretty, though.
The Browns’ defense had their worst performance as a unit this season on Sunday. They allowed 305 receiving yards to the Colts, which is the most this season. They also allowed 168 rushing yards, which is the most they have allowed in a game.
They enabled the Colts to score five touchdowns, totaling 38 points against them, the highest this season. The Browns offense committed no turnovers, resulting in none of the five total touchdowns.
The Colts scored five touchdowns on four separate drives of 70 yards or more. The first touchdown was 75 yards long in six plays. The second one also covered 52 yards in six plays. The third one covered 75 yards in eight plays, while the fourth one covered 70 yards in eight plays. The fifth score was the shortest, taking only two plays and 75 yards to complete.
“We haven’t given up that many explosive passes all season,” remarked CB Greg Newsome II. “So that’s entirely on us. We need to improve our play in the back end. We’re going to act like a man and do some stuff like that. And we have to win when we play man.”
The Browns say they had a solid practice week, so the goal is that the defensive failures from Sunday can be addressed and remedied this week in practice. Newsome stated that they must maintain their defensive quality.
“It just didn’t translate all the way to the game,” said Newsome. “And I don’t believe we played a bad game back there.” We just handed away a lot of explosives, which is not in our nature. So, you know, it’s really adhering to the script. “Go out there and keep practicing hard while trusting the process.”
The Browns defense had several bright spots in Sunday’s game. They forced three turnovers, blocked a field goal, intercepted a pass, and scored a touchdown. Two of the forced fumbles were by DE Myles Garrett, one resulted in a defensive touchdown and another that placed the Browns offense in position to score another touchdown. Garrett also blocked a field goal in the second quarter, giving the offense excellent field position.
On Sunday, Garrett carried the Browns defense. Despite his valor, the team struggled against the Colts.
“Was it flawless? No,” HC According to Kevin Stefanski. “That’s why we’re here right now, meeting with the players to see how we can improve.” We know teams will make plays against us, but we want to do everything we can to slow them down. So, if there are things that we can fix, we will fix them.”
Overall, the Browns defense wasn’t bad, considering they forced four turnovers, the most in a game this season. Prior to Sunday, the Browns had only four takeaways this season. The Browns’ defense simply did not perform to expectations.”
“We just didn’t have one great game in a row, and we’ve been playing really well,” Newsome explained. “We’ll definitely be better on defense, but it won’t be difficult.” We never set unrealistic goals for ourselves. We know how much space we have, and even in a game like this, we know what we’re capable of. So, we’ll get it fixed this week.”
