Cleveland Browns Trade Pitch Returns Former Starting RB

The Cleveland Browns keep winning close games while suffering severe injuries.

Running back Jerome Ford suffered an ankle injury in Cleveland’s Week 7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, leaving Kareem Hunt and Peirre Strong Jr. to handle the load. Both demonstrated adept on Sunday, but if Ford’s issues persist, it will add to the woes of an already shaky offense.

D'Ernest Johnson, Jaguars

The trade deadline is only eight days away, and the Browns are expected to be active in their search for wide receiver and offensive line help.On Monday, October 23, Bleacher Report’s NFL Staff advised that Cleveland negotiate a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for D’Ernest Johnson.

If [Deshaun] Watson is going to be out for a lengthy period of time, the Browns’ running game will become more essential. Without Nick Chubb, the Browns will need a backfield rotation that can make plays. Reuniting with D’Ernest Johnson would put a familiar face in their path.Travis Etienne has established himself as the undisputed feature back in the Jaguars offense. They should be willing to negotiate a cheap price for Johnson.

Ernest Johnson’s Career Year was produced in Cleveland in 2019. Johnson spent four years with Cleveland, from 2019 to 22, mostly as a backup or third-string running back. During a breakout 2021 season, he earned two starts and appeared in all 17 games. According to Pro Football Reference,

Johnson finished the season with 534 yards rushing, 137 yards receiving, and three touchdowns.

During the offseason, Jacksonville signed Johnson to a one-year, $1.2 million contract. However, Etienne’s sustained performance and the emergence of third-round rookie Tank Bigsby have forced Johnson back to the bench.

Johnson will almost certainly find himself in a similar situation if he comes to Cleveland, at least initially. However, after four years as a part of the team, his knowledge of the offensive scheme and familiarity with the personnel should allow him to contribute early and perhaps fill a large role in the run game if necessary.
If they are interested, Cleveland should be able to get Johnson in exchange for a late Day-3 draft pick or a pick swap.Given the play of Hunt and Strong this season, the degree of Ford’s injury may decide how seriously the Browns explore adding another running back.
Hunt returned to the roster after Chubb’s knee injury in Week 2. Hunt has three rushing touchdowns in that period, including two against the Colts on Sunday.
However, he has only rushed for 103 yards on an average of 3.2 yards per carry. In Indianapolis, Strong ran the ball eight times for 25 yards. In Cleveland, he has averaged 4.9 yards per rush, despite the fact that the team has relied on Strong with only 21 attempts this season.
