‘We asked’: PL boss consulted Lopetegui about signing ‘exceptional’ 25-year-old from Wolves

Matheus Nunes left Wolves on transfer deadline day – and Pep Guardiola has now revealed he spoke with Julen Lopetegui about the player.

Wanderers had a chaotic summer, which saw many high profile players leave the club.

The final big departure was Nunes, who joined Manchester City for a reported £53 million.

Nunes had gone on strike at Wolves to force the move.

Shortly after leaving, Nunes suggested there was more to his exit than what has been reported. But the 25-year-old has not yet divulged any further information.

For a lot of Wolves fans, the midfielder really let himself down with his apparent actions.

City showed late interest in Nunes and were ultimately able to get their man – and Guardiola made an interesting claim about his new player on Saturday…

Pep Guardiola says he spoke with Julen Lopetegui about Matheus Nunes

Guardiola spoke to the press after City’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Spaniard had started Nunes in that game, and the Portuguese grabbed his first assist for the club with a cross for Erling Haaland.

Nunes has hit the ground running fairly quickly.

And Guardiola revealed that City actually decided to press ahead with a move for Nunes after getting word from Lopetegui.

He said: “We knew his qualities in Sporting Lisbon. And as well from Wolves. We asked Lopetegui who is a friend of ours ‘How is he?’ All the opinions were really, really good.”

It was also put to Guardiola that he had previously called Nunes one of the best players in the world.

Guardiola downplayed his own claim, but did brand him ‘an exceptional player’.

An interesting claim from Pep

It would be fascinating to know what Lopetegui said to Guardiola about Nunes.

Obviously he’s sang his praises, and City decided to press ahead with a move.

For many Wolves fans there is still a feeling of bitterness about Nunes. There is also some annoyance with Lopetegui and how he left, too.

Nunes’ behaviour at the end was really disappointing. That said, most probably didn’t expect him to stick around at Molineux for long anyway.

His sale at least meant that Wolves were able to make a handful of signings, after a real slog of a summer.
