‘I want to’: Newcastle 22-year-old now admits he was ‘disappointed’ with Eddie Howe yesterday

has proven that he can be Newcastle United’s difference maker, even when he does not start.

The 22-year-old was named on the Newcastle bench for the first time this season for the game against Sheffield United, with Harvey Barnes taking his place on the left.

However, the summer signing picked up an early injury, allowing Gordon to come on in the 12th minute.

He made an immediate impact, and set up Sean Longstaff to score Newcastle’s first goal of the afternoon. The winger did brilliantly to get his second assist of the season, although it very easily could have been chalked off for a handball in the buildup.

Gordon then went on to score himself, with a long range effort making it 5-0 in the 61st minute. It was a wonderful strike, and a deserved goal. He was Newcastle’s best player at Bramall Lane, and was named the Player Of The Match after the full time whistle.

The former Everton man is continuing his strong start to the season, and has now admitted that he was disappointed not to start against the Blades.

Anthony Gordon really wanted to start against Sheffield United

Following the 8-0 win, Gordon spoke to NUFC TV. He was asked about starting the game on the bench rather than as a starter.

“I was a bit disappointed,” he said.

“I want to start every game, I feel like I’m playing well at the minute so I didn’t want to come out [of the side].

“Ultimately, we’ve got a really difficult season coming up and there will be probably a lot of rotation I imagine. It’s a team game and when I came on it was just about playing my part. There was no sulking on my part, I was just trying to affect the game as much as I could for

Newcastle have to use their squad this season

It is good to see Gordon disappointed. Every player should want to be in the starting lineup.

But he did not sulk, and instead went on to produce a wonderous display that really solidified himself as Newcastle’s main creative force.

As he says, there will be a lot of rotation this season. The Magpies have a lot of games, which means Eddie Howe needs to keep his squad fresh by continuously mixing it up.

He did that on Sunday, making four changes to his starting XI. There will likely be even more changes on Wednesday night, when Newcastle face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup at St James’ Park.

Gordon will be eager to return to the starting lineup, and will feel like he should after an outstanding display off the bench on Sunday.
