Tottenham ready to exploit Saudi transfer loophole to secure Ange Postecoglou reunion

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou worked with Jota at Celtic and could potentially bring him to North London following suggestions that he may leave Saudi Arabia prematurely.

Former Celtic star Jota’s Saudi Arabian misadventure has alerted Premier League teams, including Tottenham.

Due to Ivan Perisic’s long-term injury, Spurs are seeking for options out wide, with Heung-min Son being deployed both on the wing and more centrally by new manager Ange Postecoglou this season.

Postecoglou is looking for a new forward, and the situation Jota is in following his £25 million move from the Bhoys to Al-Ittihad in the summer suggests he could be a candidate. The Saudi team signed nine foreign players, but Pro League rules limit them to only eight in their squads.

That implies Jota will only play in AFC Champions League and Club World Cup matches. The player’s contract termination request was reportedly denied, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo anxious to keep him long term.

Nuno downplayed the player’s problems as a “internal matter” and stated that he is still in his plans for European matches. But it won’t stop him from considering his choices in January.

Postecoglou worked with the player at Celtic Park, so a reunion is very likely. Following Postecoglou’s hiring as Spurs manager, Jota made his displeasure apparent.

“To a man who gave me a chance in life, never wavered in his belief in his philosophy, and defined an era.” I’ll be eternally grateful for every moment. Best wishes, gaffer!”

Postecoglou said that Perisic’s injury on the eve of his first North London Derby against Arsenal was a big setback for his fledgling endeavour. “It’s disappointing for us because he’s been such an integral part of what we’ve done thus far.”
