The England international recently received criticism, having struggled during the Magpies’ 3-1 defeat to Brighton before the international break.

Questions were asked of Pope after that game, but he has responded with two consecutive clean sheets. He had to work a lot harder for the one against AC Milan than he did against Brentford, with Pope making save after save in the opening 45 minutes.

While Newcastle were disappointing in attack, there were some strong performances from a defensive point of view.

Captain Kieran Trippier was fantastic on what was his 33rd birthday, while Sean Longstaff also excelled in midfield.

However, Newcastle had to rely on their goalkeeper at times, with Nick Pope producing eight saves to deny the AC Milan forwards.

The 31-year-old, who was making his Champions League debut, was bombarded with shots in the first half, but produced some spectacular reactions to ensure he did not concede.

It was a tremendous performance from Pope, who has received praise from his manager after the game.

Eddie Howe spoke to the Telegraph after the 0-0 draw with AC Milan, and took time to comment on Pope’s performance at the San Siro.

“I don’t think we were lucky, that’s not right,” he said.

“I think some of our defensive play was superb and Nick Pope was outstanding.”

Howe also spoke to NUFC TV about Pope, adding: “He was a giant for us tonight, but I think he has been ever since he signed. He’s been an incredible shot stopper, personality. Everything is top drawer about Nick and he’s so important to us when he plays like that. He’s a very tough man to score against and we’re going to need him in this competition.”
