Ian Wright reveals Tottenham fans express joy by the work rate of James Maddison at Spurs

Ian Wright says Tottenham Hotspur fans will be ‘very surprised’ by the workrate of James Maddison.

Ever since James Maddison walked through the doors at Hotspur Way, he has lifted a crowd that was on the floor after their morale-sapping showings last season – and Wright now thinks they could be signing Brennan Johnson to help out.

Arsenal legend Wright also added that the England star will become the ‘main man’ at Tottenham and he is someone who is ‘box-to-box’ when out on the pitch, as he told Premier League Productions (28/08/23 at 2:40 pm).

Over the weekend, the 26-year-old scored his first goal for the club when Ange Postecoglou’s side maintained their unbeaten start by beating Bournemouth – legendary goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel expressed his surprise.

Once again, Maddison was at the heart of this new-look Spurs side showcasing flair, quick movement, athleticism and creativity.

But Wright thinks it’s another side of Maddison’s game that will take his new fans aback.

“He will be (the main man at Spurs),” said Wright. “I think the Tottenham fans will be very surprised by how much work he gets through.

“He will go box-to-box. You see him in the midfield, you will see him right for that goal there (vs. Bournemouth). Right at the top end.

“He has got a free reign. Someone like him with free reign, then you get the pace up front. People who look after you like Bissouma and Bentancur.

“Then, all of a sudden, you have got James Maddison floating in and around all of that. Just get Richarlison, he just needs to nick a couple of goals and get themselves going.”

Maddison has brought life to Spurs

Harry Kane, who? It would have been easy for the club to feel sorry for themselves and the mood to be dampened by the transfer of their club-record goalscorer.

But whilst Postecoglou has made sure everyone remains positive, the presence and performances of Maddison have also played their part.

What’s even better for Spurs fans is that he is still getting better and he’s still getting comfortable at his new club.
