Leeds United make approach to sign Joseph Paintsil from Genk

Leeds United’s hunt for attacking reinforcements is being left last this window, but if a deal for Paintsil can be pulled off then it could be worth the wait.

While Joel Piroe appears to be the attacking priority at Elland Road, with the Daily Mail reporting (23 August) that the Whites have submitted a £10million bid for the striker, a deal for the winger could help address their thinning personnel on the flanks.

With Willy Gnonto’s and Luis Sinisterra’s Leeds futures uncertain and Jack Harrison already making the move back to the Premier League to Everton, Daniel Farke will be keen to bolster this area quickly.

Paintsil had a standout season in Belgium in his last campaign, scoring 17 league goals in 36 appearances in the Belgian Pro League. It was truly a coming-out season for the 26-year-old and he could be rewarded with a move to England.

3SportsGH reporter Owuraku Ampofo claimed (22 August) that the Whites could face competition from Serie A side Fiorentina for the Ghanaian’s signature, while Sky Sports reported in their live transfer blog (22 August, 16:49) that Genk would consider offers upwards of £8.5million.

So there are plenty of obstacles in the way before Leeds can get a deal for Paintsil done. Rivalling a top-flight side will always be tough for a Championship side while £8.5million may not be possible without further player sales.

The fact that Paintsil shares an agent with Bamford could be used to Leeds’ advantage, but ultimately the player must decide if his future remains in Belgium or if a switch to either Florence or Yorkshire suits his career better.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been tipped to complete their latest signing “in the coming days”.
