Former Molineux full-back Lee Naylor has urged Gary O’Neil to give Fabio Silva a run of games for Wolves, after his difficult afternoon against Brighton.
Wanderers crashed to a 4-1 defeat on Saturday against the Seagulls.
Wolves did OK in the first-half, but came unstuck when Kaoru Mitoma scored a wonderful solo goal.
But a dreadful 10 minute period at the start of the second-half saw Wolves capitulate and concede three goals.
The game may have been very different had young Silva converted a one-on-one chance in the first-half.
Silva was slipped in by Matheus Cunha, but could find the finish past goalkeeper Jason Steele.
Despite a tough outing for Silva, Naylor believes O’Neil must stick with the youngster…
Lee Naylor wants Fabio Silva to get a run of games for Wolves
Naylor was speaking on the Wolves Weekly podcast after the defeat to Brighton.
Silva came up, with fans having clamoured for his inclusion in the starting XI.
Asked if he felt O’Neil shouldn’t have started him against a great pressing team like Brighton, Naylor said: “No. He’s a willing runner and he’s powerful and fast.
“At the end of the day, he’s got to have a run of games! He has to. You have to give him a run of games. It’s not good putting him in for one and then taking him out for two and then putting him back in for two, taking him out for three. A striker needs consistency.
“For me, I would give him a run of games, then you can properly judge him as a player. Five to 10 games. Starting every week. I don’t mind that.”
Fabio Silva does need show of faith
Silva got the chance that many fans wanted him to get on Saturday.
Sadly though he didn’t take his opportunity, but Naylor is right.
Persistence is required. Silva has come back to the club a better player than when he first arrived.
Wolves may have lost their first two games. But they have created a lot of chances and there is potential for Silva to get amongst the goals if just gets that show of faith from O’Neil.
It was not ideal that he missed that one-on-one on Saturday. But hopefully O’Neil gets him back in the starting XI against Everton and challenges him to atone.
The new manager is said to see him as someone who can play a big part this season. Hopefully he can be much more than just cameos off the bench.
