Martin O’Neil advise Nottingham forest to sign £9m PL unshakeable defender

Nottingham Forest legend Martin O’Neil is giving his backing to the club’s Gonzalo Montiel pursuit as Sevilla’s World Cup winning defender closes in on a move to the Premier League.

If Steve Cooper’s side find themselves receiving a pressure penalty at some point this season, perhaps the Nottingham Forest boss will be tempted to hand set-piece duties over to his new full-back.

Gonzalo Montiel, after all, scored the winning penalties for both Argentina and Sevilla in the World Cup and the UEFA Europa League finals last season. The former River Plate ace brings more than a dead-eyed reliability from 12 yards with him to the City Ground, however

An impressive one-v-one defender and effective going forward too, Montiel could prove to be excellent value for money at just over £9 million. The Daily Mail believe that Nottingham Forest have agreed a fee with Sevilla.

Montiel should jet in for a medical imminently, and could make his debut away to Erik ten Hag’s unconvincing Manchester United side next weekend.

O’Neil, a two-time European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough, believes Montiel could be an inspired piece of business too.

“Defensively, they need sorting,” O’Neil, who also coached Forest a couple of seasons ago, tells talkSPORT (21 August, 11am). “They do seem like they concede goals.

“Going forward, I do think they have enough, particularly if (Brennan) Johnson says. They have some numbers too.

“And, overall, I agree that defensively they will need to tighten up

Nottingham Forest have conceded three goals in their opening two Premier League games so far, though that 2-1 defeat at a dominant Arsenal side was a lot more one-sided the scoreline suggests.

Sevilla, meanwhile, could also lose fellow full-back Marcos Acuna to another English-based outfit. Aston Villa have agreed terms with Acuna, though they are yet to meet Sevilla’s £8.5 million asking price.
