Newcastle United smashed Aston Villa 5-1 at St James’ Park to kick off the 2023/24 Premier League season.
Eddie Howe’s team had a spectacular performance, demonstrating right away that they will do all possible to duplicate last season’s success.
The Magpies dominated at St James’ Park, putting on an almost flawless display to kick off the new season.Alexander Isak was excellent in front of goal, but Sandro Tonali stole the show.
The 23-year-old was given the start and delivered with a goal in his debut. He exuded class throughout the evening, improving as the game progressed.
Harvey Barnes, who came off the bench and scored and assisted, also had a strong debut.
Newcastle’s season could not have gone any better, and the Toon Army were in ecstasy as they saw their team take top of the Premier League with a 5-1 victory.
‘We are Newcastle, and we will win the league.’
Obviously, being at the top is fantastic, but this does not imply that a title charge is imminent.
However, this did not stop Newcastle fans from getting ahead of themselves.
The crowd erupted in the 80th minute with a chant of “We’re Newcastle, and we’re going to win the league!”
It was plainly done in jest, as Howe’s side were not even on track to become Premier League champions at the time. That changed in stoppage time when Barnes made it 5-1, eclipsing Brighton’s 4-1 victory earlier in the day.
Newcastle currently leads the league with a goal differential of +4. It’s a strong show of intent from Howe’s team, which many anticipate will finish outside of the top four.
The Magpies truly put down a marker on Saturday, indicating they are much more dangerous than previously thought as they swept away an emerging force in Aston Villa.
Will we be able to win the league? Almost definitely not, but that won’t stop the Geordie faithful from having a good time!
