Newcastle United have had a fairly successful transfer window thus far, with Eddie Howe significantly improving his squad ahead of the new season.
Sandro Tonali brings further class and talent to the midfield, while Harvey Barnes will deliver the goals that Allan Saint-Maximin lacked at St James’ Park. Then there’s Tino Livramento, who gives defensive cover as well as a glimpse into the future.
Howe’s next transfer target is a center-back. He wants a right-sided central defender to compete with Fabian Schar, who is expected to play against Aston Villa in the season opener.
Newcastle, on the other hand, is aware that they require a long-term replacement for the 31-year-old and have been looking into numerous options.
It is unclear how much money remains after the club spent more than £100 million on the Livramento deal, but Howe is anxious to add at least one more player to his team.
Now, Craig Hope of the Daily Mail has provided an update on what Newcastle intends to do, as well as several potential targets who the Magpies have evaluated.

According to Hope on Twitter, Newcastle could attempt to sign a new defender on loan, but Howe has told him that selling someone to raise finances is not an option. That is not surprising given that we do not have someone worth selling for a substantial sum.
Hope has also named three centre-backs whom Newcastle has scouted. Jean-Clair Todibo, Edmond Tapsoba, Perr Schurrs, Joachim Andersen, Odilon Kossounou, and Antonio Silva are among the players on his list.
There are several well-known names on that list. Andersen has been linked with Newcastle throughout the summer, but no bid has been made. Jean-Clair Todibo has also been suggested as a possible target, but he is also on the radar of Manchester United.
Tottenham was interested in signing Edmond Tapsoba.
Tapsoba is the most intriguing potential among the guys named by Hope. He is a 24-year-old Burkina Faso international who plays in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen.
He has performed admirably in Germany and was on the verge of joining the Premier League earlier this summer.
Tapsoba was a big target for Tottenham Hotspur, but the club has decided not to sign the defender, who is reportedly valued at £61 million by Bayer Leverkusen.
With Tottenham out of the running, Newcastle might take advantage. However, signing Tapsoba could result in a near-club-record cost. Given how stretched the club’s finances are in terms of FFP, it’s tough to see that occurring.
Newcastle, on the other hand, has several fascinating alternatives on their radar, and you have to think that the club has a strategy in place to finance a deal for a player as expensive as Tapsoba.
