Watts has signed the League One team for the 2023-24 season, bringing an end to his stint at Newcastle, where his contract is set to expire next summer. The centre-back spent the 2021-22 season with The Latics, helping them win League One.
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Peterborough United, but due to injury, he only made 11 appearances in all competitions. Watts trained with Newcastle’s first team before to his loan but was not part in any pre-season games and did not travel with the group to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series.
“Last time I was here, I created memories that will last my whole career, and I’m wanting to make more memories in a Wigan shirt now.”
And Wigan manager Maloney paid appreciation to the work Newcastle have done to help get the deal over the line.
“I’m really happy that we’ve managed to secure Kell’s return,” he said. “A left-sided centre-back is a difficult profile to get, so he’s a really positive signing for us.
“Off the field, he’s the type of character we need, and he was extremely popular amongst staff and previous players during his previous loan here.”
“He’s a critical signing for us.” It took some time, but I genuinely appreciate what Newcastle United and the folks here at Wigan have done to get this done.”
Watts is Newcastle’s third loan departure this summer, following Matthew Bondswell to Newport County and new acquisition Yankuba Minteh to Feyenoord for the 2023-24 season. Jamal Lewis and Garang Kuol are expected to leave on loan to Watford and FC Volendam, respectively.
