Tottenham at the verge of landing a potential extraordinary midfielder this summer

Tottenham Hotspur’s outgoings look likely to be frenetic in the coming weeks, with a number of famous figures rumored to be on their way out as part of Ange Postecoglou’s summer overhaul.

Aside from the impending departure of icon Harry Kane, the Lilywhites have only recently accepted a proposal from Spartak Moscow for Davinson Sanchez, and long-serving captain Hugo Lloris is also likely to leave the club after 11 years.

The veteran Frenchman could be joined by Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who appears ready to join Atletico Madrid sooner rather than later after spending the previous three seasons at N17.

With Postecoglou likely keen to replace the former Southampton man, the Daily Mail only recently revealed that Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz are being considered as potential options – as too is Celta Vigo sensation, Gabri Veiga.

Gabri Veiga is a person.

The talented Spaniard has piqued the interest of clubs such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, as well as Spurs, following a breakout season in La Liga last season.

With a rumoured buyout clause of roughly £34 million, the 21-year-old might be a relatively inexpensive choice for Daniel Levy, with the Tottenham chairman potentially able to obtain a player of “unique” skill, according to former manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Having scored 11 goals and chipped in with four assists last term the Spain U21 international has certainly put himself on the map, with only Kane and Heung-min Son having registered more goal involvements for the north Londoners last season.

Noted for his “box-to-box” style by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the youngster could potentially emerge as a dream successor to Luka Modric at Spurs, with the diminutive Croatian having previously dazzled in his central midfield berth during his four-year stint at White Hart Lane.

How good was Luke Modric when he was at Tottenham?

While the now-veteran powerhouse has gone on to win the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or since leaving the Lilywhites in 2012, it was in England that he fully revealed his talent to the rest of the world.

Much like Veiga, the 5 foot 8 master was an all-action asset in the center of the park during his stint in the Premier League, with former manager Harry Redknapp stating back in 2009:

“He tackles, heads the ball, and has strong legs.” He’s a strong little kid. He has a strong heart and is an excellent all-around player.”

While perhaps a less attack-minded asset than Veiga, the one-time Dinamo Zagreb man did still chip in with a respectable haul of 42 goals and assists in 160 games in all competitions for Spurs, showcasing his ability to make a telling impact in the final third.

The two are similarly similar in their ability to just glide forward with the ball at their feet, with Modric still ranking in the top 17% of those in his position in Europe’s top five leagues for progressive carries, while Veiga remains in the top 12%.

It would be difficult for the latter man to reach the same heights as the present Real Madrid star, but Carvahal has given insight into the Spaniard’s lofty potential, tipping him to become “an extra special player” in the future.

While rival teams may be sniffing around, north London could be the ideal place for Veiga’s abilities to be cultivated, much as Modric’s were.
