Newcastle United set to sign a centre-back from Monaco this summer

Newcastle United are reportedly getting closer to signing Axel Disasi from Monaco.

Eddie Howe will concentrate on getting his players ready to fight in the Champions League after confirming the Magpies’ first participation in the league since the 2002/03 season.

The northeast side is closing in on the 25-year-old, who may offer firepower to the backline, according to reports earlier this week.

Could Axel Disasi join Newcastle United?

According to FootballTransfers, Disasi has ‘confirmed personal terms’ with Newcastle regarding a summer transfer.

According to the report, the Ligue 1 club is expecting an offer in the range of €40m-€50m (£34m-£43m) for the defender, who has become a key figure in their back line.

Manchester United has also been mentioned as a Premier League club interested in the Frenchman.

How talented is Axel Disasi?

With Jamal Lascelles’ future in doubt, Howe must add depth to his back line after uncovering his preferred central defensive partnership in Sven Botman and Fabian Schar.

The Englishman might gain more than simply squad numbers by bringing in Disasi, who is one of the most well-known defenders in Ligue 1 and could compete to enhance the quality of performance between the preferred duo.

According to Sofascore, in 38 Ligue 1 games for Monaco, the 25-year-old contributed nine clean sheets while also showing some form in the final third by scoring three and assisting three.

The Gonesse-born jewel, described as a “complete and dominant” player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, might be the figure who transforms the Magpies from top-four newcomers to consolidating their authority among Europe’s elite.

Kulig has compared the 25-year-old behemoth to Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk, and he might have a similar impact on Howe’s team as the Dutchman did on Liverpool.

When he joined the Merseyside club in the winter of 2018, few expected him to have such an impact on Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

When he joined the Merseyside club in the winter of 2018, few expected him to have such an impact on Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

During his first full season, the centre-back helped his team win their sixth Champions League, and he was named UEFA Player of the Year.

The Reds won their first Premier League title the following season, reestablishing their dominance as a reinvigorated side in the country after a period away from the spotlight.

Van Dijk’s impact on the team was enormous – an acquisition that unified the defense and propelled the club to new heights, something Howe may duplicate at St James’ Park next season.

Disasi, who won 59% of his total duels in Ligue 1 last season, ranks in the top 4% of centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues in terms of progressive distribution over the past year.

According to FBref, the Frenchman averaged 5.80 progressive passes and 1.70 progressive carries per 90, demonstrating his ability to transition play from the back.

The 25-year-old also averaged an impressive 1.51 interceptions per 90 for Monaco in Ligue 1 last campaign, a higher average than what was recorded by Van Dijk in his league-winning season with Liverpool, who averaged 1.1 per game.

Howe could land a gem in Disasi, who has shown that he is capable of leading a backline with composure and strength at such a young age, in a player that could progress as a top defender, following in similar footsteps to Van Dijk but this time at St James’ Park.
