Conor Gallagher, a Chelsea midfielder, is hoping to stay at the club and work under Mauricio Pochettino despite interest from Newcastle United.
The Telegraph (subscription required) reported a few days ago that the Magpies are interested in signing Gallagher on loan during the summer transfer window. According to the report, Pochettino is eager to keep the England international.
The 23-year-old, who has been part of the Chelsea youth side since 2016, still has a contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt).
Here’s what the midfielder said when asked about his future at the club (quoted by Chronicle).
“I will just relax and get ready for pre-season. Mauricio Pochettino is a top manager and I am looking forward to working with him.”
Following an impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace during the 2021/22 season, Gallagher did not play much for Chelsea last season. If we look at the numbers, he played just over 2000 minutes in all competitions.
With the midfield clear-out taking place in the last few days at the club, there might be a bit more room for the 23-year-old to stake his claim for a regular place in the XI come next season.
The England international can operate as a number eight in a three-man midfield or as a number ten in Pochettino’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are contemplating a large bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo. Whatever happens on that front, maintaining Gallagher would be the best option for the upcoming season.
The Englishman possesses the characteristics and work rate required to thrive in Pochettino’s demanding playing style. His adaptability could also come in helpful.
